Volunteer Programs @ CRH
The center has been fully operational for over five years and the work undertaken thus far, has had a significant impact on many lives. However, resources are limited and much help is needed from the general public in achieving the organization’s objectives. Volunteers are urgently required to help in several different capacities:
Counseling
- Hotline - Volunteers are needed to man an existing help-line for PLWHA. The volunteer should be available to receive calls over the weekend as well as during the week. One way of implementing this could be through advertising the volunteer’s GSM phone number or appropriating a CRH GSM phone to the volunteer for the sole purpose of help-line communications.
- Face to Face Counseling - Counselors are needed to help counsel PLWHA within the complex. This is a job for anyone who actively believes in empowering PLWHA, an experienced counselor, or perhaps a person who is living with or affected by HIV/AIDS themselves.
Documentation & Resource room
- The center is equipped with a mini library, which requires management. The volunteer will be responsible for the organization of books, journals and the general information resources available. In doing so, the volunteer will be more adept in training staff and aiding research programs.
Internet Access
- Download Resource - With the internet being the best way of garnering information, a volunteer is needed to download important resource information from the web.
- Partners - Information partners are also needed; i.e. people who will pass on useful information to CRH, perhaps information they have come across through their own research which they believe will be helpful to fulfilling CRH’s mission.
Writers
- Volunteer Writers/Journalists are required to assist in the write-up of proposals and reports, thereby establishing a symbiotic relationship with CRH as this will also create increased exposure for the writer.
Editor
- The volunteer would help in editing our quarterly publication CRH- TOUCH and perhaps contribute to the write-up of articles in the publication as well.
Medical/Nursing Care
- The Care and Support Department of CRH are currently over-laden with clients. There is an increased need for qualified Doctors and Nurses who will volunteer to consult with PLWHA. Round the clock support is the nature of care required, so volunteer’s who will undertake Home Visitations would be greatly appreciated.
Advocates/Lobbyist
- Professionals in the legal profession as well as members of the general public are all in a position to help CRH by working towards its’ goals and acting as a voice especially at policy and professional level.
Mentor Client /Employment Opportunities
- It is important for working professionals to put something back into the society. CRH’s mission provides them with an opportunity to do so by posing encouraging individuals to become mentors to PLWHA either through sponsorship or by establishing a link between them and another who is in a position to help.
- Alternatively, professionals established in their field can create job opportunities for PWLHA or their dependants, which in turn will decrease the burden on the person living with HIV/AIDS, and on CRH.
Fundraising
- Fundraising individuals are required to volunteer their time to help raise awareness and resources for CRH. Volunteers are also encouraged to develop their own fundraising ideas, which may later be implemented.
Trade (Small Scale Business)
- Working professionals proficient in business start-ups are required to train PLWHA in developing small businesses, which will provide them with a stable income. A stable income means greater affordability of healthcare maintenance.
- These businesses can take any form. For instance, a farmer could train a PLWHA on pig farming or piggery likewise he/she can be a trainer to others and a landlord could donate a disused piece of land to the cause.
- Other areas of training may include computer and internet access skills, computer networking, video coverage, printing, secretarial/book-keeping skills, hairdressing, tailor, etc.
- Volunteers can also sponsor the training and eventual settlement of a PLWHA or a PABA
